Scope 2 Factors

The location-based Scope 2 emission factor is the number a company multiplies its metered electricity by for the purchased-electricity line of a CSRD, SECR or CDP disclosure. This is the open stand-in for it, for every country, with its vintage and its revision history: a grid average like the standard's, but a lifecycle one in CO₂e, so it counts the emissions upstream of the plant as well and reads higher than a generation-only factor.

Latest grid emission factor, gCO₂e per kWh (900 or more shown as 900)

Among grids over 10 TWh the factor runs from Ethiopia at 23.1 g per kWh to Turkmenistan at 1,306 g. Under CSRD that figure is audited, and companies buy the generation-only version of this table from consultancies and the IEA. The reference table →

Insisting on this year's factor covers under half the world; accepting last year's covers almost all of it. The cut-off is a choice about how much of the world a filing leaves out. Vintage and restatements →

Where the power is used is not where the emissions land

Lyon and Göteborg draw 17% of the group's electricity and report under 2% of its emissions; Pune, Katowice and Suzhou report far more than they draw. The calculation is only MWh times the factor; the grid does the rest. The worked example →
